Tips for dining out with your toddler

Most parents with a toddler have faced an embarrassing situation with their toddlers while in public. Dining out can sometimes be a stressful event. Before dining out with your toddler, especially if it's the first time, take some time to get prepared.

  Be prepared

You know that you'll have to wait while you're in the restaurant. You wait for the server to take your order and you wait for the food to be cooked. All this waiting can make any hungry person cranky so think of how your toddler is going to feel! Bring some light snacks and small, non-invasive toys along. I always have a small baggie of Cheerios or a pack of Gerber's puffs in my daughter's bag. Only give them the snack if they are hungry and you want them to nibble. I also grab a book or something quiet that she likes to play with. This will keep your toddler occupied while you're waiting.

Check your timing

Try to dine out close to your normal lunch or dinnertime. This way, your toddler isn't cranky from needing a nap being too hungry.

Choose the right restaurant.

Try family friendly places, but try to avoid places with a lot of games. The distractions will just wind your toddler up. Once she's used to dining out, then you can head for Dave and Busters or Chuck E Cheese. Also, before you go, inquire about the restroom facilities. Try to see if there is a suitable place to change your toddler's diapers if necessary. And try to find out the peak hours. If there are a lot of patrons, your wait time will be longer.

Be sure to pack necessities

My daughter's bag is always filled with diapers, wipes, snacks, juice, water, and extra clothes. Be prepared for messes. Have a handy wipe, or a regular baby wipe, handy.

Be prepared to leave if you must

If all else fails and your toddler is disruptive, leave. Don't worry, lots of parents do it. Trying to bargain is only going to teach them that they can have their way if they throw a tantrum or misbehave. If your toddler won't calm down and you've ordered your food, ask the server to box it and head home. You can always try again another day.

Remember, they are still babies in a way and new experiences can be fun and frightening all at the same time. Take your time and be prepared before heading out. Mentally prepare yourself for the possibility of leaving if you have to. Toddlers will pick up on your feelings and can sense when you're stressed. Relax, think positive thoughts, and try to have fun.
