To breastfeed or not to breastfeed

Making the decision to breastfeed after pregnancy is a very personal one that many women find themselves wrestling with. While there are some very compelling reasons to consider this choice carefully, selecting not to do so or finding the undertaking impossible is not the end of the world. Babies can and do thrive no matter whether their initial nourishment comes from their mothers or bottles.

Taking a look at the pros and cons of breastfeeding can help women make more informed decisions. There are some big ups and downs that can some along with the prospect.

THE PROS OF BREASTFEEDING

The benefits of breastfeeding are hard to deny. The potential benefits to both mother and baby are high. It is important, however, to keep in mind that in many cases the perks can be replicated through the use of proper formulas for feeding.

The pros include:

• Antibiotic properties of breast milk - The initial milk produced by a new mother is extremely high in nutrients and even natural antibiotics. Babies who are breastfed are less likely to suffer problems with illness or infection.

• Lower disease risks - Breastfed babies have been shown to have a lower risk factor for diseases such as diabetes and asthma.

• Bonding - Mothers and babies tend to bond very well during the breastfeeding process. This can be a great way to help a little one feel comfort and love during the first days and months of life.

• Weight loss - Mothers who breastfeed can enjoy some incredible weight loss benefits. An extra 500 calories a day can be burned during this process.

• Disease resistance in women - Mothers who breastfeed have been shown to have a lower risk of breast cancer and osteoporosis, among other benefits.

• Less mess and hassle - Women who choose to breastfeed find they do not have to lug around bottles and formula. This can be an incredible benefit - especially during the first few weeks when sleep is at a premium for a mother.

THE CONS OF BREASTFEEDING

As beneficial as breastfeeding can prove to be, there are some potential pitfalls that come along with the prospect. Many women find they can be overcome, but others simply are not comfortable with the concept.

The cons of breastfeeding include:

• Difficulty getting away - Mothers who breastfeed are often tethered to their newborns in the first few months of life. While it's possible to pump to enable a return to work, this can be a hassle that some women do not want to endure.

• Problems for other family members - While it's okay to pump and fill bottles to allow others to bond with baby during feedings, this can cause nipple confusion in some newborns. Some women simply prefer formula and bottle feeding to enable dad and older siblings to get in on the act more readily.

• Discomfort - Breastfeeding can some with some complications. Plugged milk ducts, engorgement and other issues can lead to discomforts.

Making the decision to breastfeed is a very personal one that should be carefully considered. Some women find they are in love with the idea until they face it head on. Other mothers and babies take to the prospect quite readily. When it comes to breastfeeding, the best choice is the one that makes both mother and baby the most comfortable and happy.
